Warnayaka Art

Rarri St, Lajamanu, NT, 0852

Warnayaka Art is located in Lajamanu, Northern Territory. This art centre is owned and operated by Warlpiri people of the Tanami Desert in Central Australia.

The older generation here still remember the first time they met white Australians. Their great grandchildren now live in Lajamanu, 590kms south-west of Katherine. The population of around 800 people and their stories are part of the art produced here.

Since 1986 Warlpiri have been creating art on canvas and linen for sale. Prior to this, artistic practise was on the body, stone, wooden objects, large ground murals, dance and song. Art practise was used as a way of teaching important information that needed to be memorised and preserved. Preservation of knowledge was very effective. To this day the artists paint to preserve knowledge so it is available to the next generations. They want to pass on the cultural significance of Warlpiri, the culture of the people of Lajamanu, which encompasses not only art, but includes language, social structure, law and country. In doing so, it is understood that excellence in art, prosperity from art sales, employment opportunities and preservation of pride in being Warlpiri will result.

The art for sale from Warnayaka Art is a small representation of critical information held and preserved for thousands of years.
